Celebrating International Music Day

International Music Day

Today, on International Music Day, we take a moment to reflect on the power of music and to celebrate the incredible work that has taken place across our OPUS Music CIC community over the past year.

It has been a year filled with music, connection, and care — one where we’ve witnessed first-hand how music can lift spirits, bring comfort, and create meaningful moments across health and social care settings.

This year, we were honoured to receive an award from Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, recognising the impact of our work and the dedication of our team. It has been a privilege to share music with families, patients, and staff across the East Midlands and beyond, helping to create spaces of joy, calm, and connection in hospitals and care settings.

Our work has also expanded through training healthcare professionals, both locally in the East Midlands and nationally, equipping them with the skills and confidence to bring music into their daily practice. We’ve continued to support and learn alongside a wonderful group of mentees, whose passion and creativity continues to inspire us.

We are especially proud to have started a brand-new group in Bolsover, offering musical support for people living with dementia. This new chapter has already shown us the profound impact music can have on memory, wellbeing, and connection in the community.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our brilliant colleagues, musicians, healthcare partners, and community members who continue to believe in and champion the role of music in health and wellbeing.

As we look ahead to 2026, we are filled with excitement for the opportunities to come. New projects, new connections, and another year of making music together.

Here’s to another year of making music in health and social care settings an championing the value that music brings to our health and wellbeing.

Happy International Music Day! 🎶

Claire & Flo’s Story

At just 2 years and 8 months old, Florence has already shown more courage than many of us do in a lifetime. Born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome – a rare and serious condition affecting normal blood flow through the heart – Flo’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Her life has been filled with hospital stays, procedures, and challenges that no child should ever have to face. But through all of it, there has been a constant presence bringing light, joy, and calm: music, and the musicians of OPUS Music CIC.

Music as Medicine for Babies and Young Children

When a child is admitted to hospital, it can be a time of deep stress and uncertainty, for the young patient, their family, and even the clinical staff around them. At OPUS Music CIC, we’ve long believed in the power of live music to support health and well-being, especially in the hospital environment. But belief alone is not enough, we also turn to science to back our work. Increasingly, medical research supports what we see every day: music can have measurable, beneficial effects on babies and young children in hospital, helping to reduce stress, ease pain, improve physiological stability, and support family bonding.
