This is the first time such a framework has been created in the field, offering a clear description of the skills, behaviours, and values that underpin high-quality music-making in health and social care.

We have created the OPUS Music CIC Quality Framework for Healthcare Musicians to define and demonstrate what excellence looks like in the practice of Healthcare Musicianship. As the first framework of its kind, it sets out clear standards of practice and core competencies that describe the skills, behaviours, and values underpinning high-quality music-making for health and wellbeing.
Developed through consultation with healthcare professionals and musicians, the framework provides a shared language for understanding this specialist practice, helping to articulate its distinct value to funders, partners, and practitioners. By offering structure, clarity, and a pathway for growth – from Emerging to Practicing to Leading Healthcare Musicians – the framework reinforces OPUS’ commitment to quality and rigour, while supporting the recognition of Healthcare Musicianship as a credible and professional career path.
